History of PWA

Our country is mushrooming with welfare organizations doing philanthropic work for all and sundry. However, it can be said without a doubt that none have a history as high spirited and youthful or a concept as enriching as that of Patients’ Welfare Association.

Founded in 1979 by three students of Dow Medical College, PWA is in its 31st year of humanitarian service and needs no introduction to most of Karachi’s population.

Following are the milestones achieved by the association from its inception to date.

 

TIMELINE 1979-2009

1979

Inception of PWA as a cabinet of medicines, by three students of Dow Medical College

1980

The first audit of PWA was prepared by Farooq Ali & Co.

1981

First Annual Souvenir was published

1982

PWA Blood Bank was started in October of 1982

1983

Free of Cost mobile ECG service started for the patients of Civil Hospital, Karachi.
Cryofuge and ultra low deep freezer was donated to PWA’s Voluntary Blood Bank by a philanthropist.
A three day PWA Dow festival was organized by Patients’ Welfare Association, at the Arts Council, Karachi.

1984

Blood fractionation unit became functional in May of 1984.
PWA Follow up Clinic started working in June of 1984.

1985

Due to rapid progress in different fields, Vice Presidents and Directors were assigned for each department
In January, the General Body decided to constitute Board of Governors to supervise the Executive Committee.
PWA Drug Store was established; inaugurated on 10th September 1985. The initial funds for the store were provided by Afaq Benefit Fund Committee.
Department of Records and Registration was set up.
