Thalassemia Day Care Centre

Thalassaemia is a congenital anomaly that causes severe anemia and other complications in its sufferers. This incurable ailment claims millions of victims every year and has a high fatality rate if it is not managed adequately. People with this bleak condition need regular blood transfusions, medicine and routine medical checkups. Thus the management of Thalassaemia is not only difficult but also very expensive and unaffordable for people with a low financial status.

Patients’ Welfare Association has been helping out such destitute and distressed souls since 1982 with the construction of its blood bank by providing them free of cost screened blood bags. As the number of patients with this illness rose, PWA established a separate sub department for Thalasaemia that provided packed red blood cells (RBCs), iron chelating agents and other medicine to over 110 registered patients with many more unregistered patients also receiving blood bags. As the victims of this dreadful disease are increasing day by day, PWA aims to establish Thalasaemia Day Care Centre to accommodate many more patients as well as provide better health care facilities for them This centre will not only provide medicine and blood but also free checkups, follow ups and diagnostic tests. Its construction is already under way but substantial finances are required for its completion.
